MNT 592: Research Methods & Ethics in

 Micro and Nanotechnology (Section: 01)

Course Description:  ethical issues in scientific research, qualitative & quantitative research methods, how to cite.

Course Instructor: Prof. Dr. Burcu Akata Kurç; akata@metu.edu.tr; 2106459

Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the students will be able to:

  1. To understands ethics in science and research;
  2. To understand the essential characteristics of basic research methods

Course Requirements:

The participants will read the following reading materials.

1. To have a thesis advisor and a thesis topic

2. To read Scientific Research in Information Systems*

3. To read Akademik Etik İlkeler (YÖK)*

4. To read Basics of Scientific Thought*

*All will be supplied by the instructor

Course Assessment:

There will be an exam based on the reading materials provided* (%50)

Literature Review (%50): The Advisor of the student will choose a research topic and the student will prepare the Literature Review on the chosen topic. The prepared Literature Review will be marked by the thesis advisor of the student.

Students should score minimum 70 out 100 in order to pass this course.

Literature Review: Having a good grasp of the existing current studies in the field is a must for every researcher. Therefore, you need to be able locate necessary resources of your interest and to be able to interpret them in a scholarly manner. For this assignment, you will conduct an extensive literature review, locate at least 20 research articles and prepare an annotated report which will not exceed 8 pages.
